Throwing Knives 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Sport Throwing
Knife throwing is a precision sport with a long history in circus performance, competitive athletics, and outdoor recreation. If you’re new to it, here’s everything you need to get started safely and effectively.
What to Look for in a Throwing Knife
Not all knives are designed for throwing. A proper sport throwing blade should be:
- Balanced — Either blade-heavy, handle-heavy, or center-balanced depending on your throwing style
- Single piece construction — No folding mechanisms, moving parts, or separate handle scales that can break on impact
- Durable steel — Typically 420 or 440 stainless; thick enough to withstand repeated impacts
- Blunt or rounded tip — Beginners should start with less aggressive tips until technique is developed
No-Spin vs. Half-Spin Throwing
The two most common beginner techniques are:
- Half-spin — The knife rotates once every 10–12 feet; most common for standard-length blades
- No-spin — Advanced technique where the blade travels point-first without rotating; requires precise grip and release
Safety First
Always throw at a proper wooden target (end-grain wood is ideal), ensure a clear backstop, and never throw toward people or animals. Wear closed-toe shoes and keep bystanders well behind the throwing line.
